The Royal Newfoundland Constabulary (RNC) is alerting the public to continued reports of the grandparent scam targeting senior citizens in Newfoundland and Labrador.
The scam typically involves a phone call to a senior from someone pretending to be a family member in distress. A follow-up call from a person claiming to be an official often pressures the victim to provide payment immediately to resolve the fabricated issue. These high-pressure tactics are a hallmark of this fraudulent scheme.
The RNC has investigated several reports of this scam in recent years, including one that resulted in the arrest of a male from Ontario. Police say the scam is part of a sophisticated criminal network preying on vulnerable members of the community, particularly seniors.
The RNC emphasizes that no legitimate law enforcement agency will ever demand money over the phone. If you receive such a call, hang up immediately and contact your loved one directly.

🚨 Mise en garde contre l’arnaque du faux petit-enfant – Terre-Neuve-et-Labrador
Le Service de police royale de Terre-Neuve (SPRTN) met en garde la population concernant la poursuite d’escroqueries ciblant les aînés dans la province, connues sous le nom d’arnaque du faux petit-enfant.
Cette arnaque consiste en un appel téléphonique à une personne âgée par un individu prétendant être un membre de la famille en détresse. Ensuite, un faux représentant officiel appelle pour exiger un paiement immédiat afin de régler une situation inventée. Ces tactiques de pression intense sont typiques de ce type de fraude.
Le SPRTN a enquêté sur plusieurs cas dans les dernières années, ce qui a mené à l’arrestation d’un homme de l’Ontario. Il a été déterminé qu’il s’agissait d’un réseau criminel sophistiqué visant les personnes vulnérables, surtout les aînés.
